Journey to a troubled heart
The Mechanic Catheter Advancer (MCA) is a key component of the robot-guided surgical system Aeon Phocus from ETH spin-off Aeon Scientific. In collaboration with the engineering team, we developed the ergonomics, usability and user experience of this disposable medical device for cardiac surgery.
The main emphasis in designing the catheter advancer was on ensuring simplicity and safety of operation. The advancer is intended to be easily and securely aligned on the patient's leg, even in difficult situations, such as when it's bloodied and only one hand is available.
The sterile disposable packaging is designed to house the mechanical catheter advancer, the magnetic ablation catheter, and the haemostatic valve. It is an integral part of the disposable medical kit and must meet medical, manufacturing and functional criteria. The look and feel of the packaging must communicate the values of the brand to all relevant stakeholders to ensure consistent revenue generation.
In catheter ablation using the Magnetic Catheter Steering System (CMAG), the surgeon guides the catheter tip through the patient's heart chambers from a control room, utilizing a medical joystick. The design objective is to harmonize these distinct components into a cohesive system, integrating form, function, and brand identity.
