Un-break my heart
For the ETH Spin-Off Aeon Scientific we designed the robot-guided surgical system Aeon Phocus. This allows safe and fast treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. The Magnetic Catheter Steering System (CMAG) is intended for use in hybrid operating rooms. With the help of imaging techniques, it enables minimally invasive surgery on internal organs, especially the heart.
The design of the treatment unit is oriented formally, ergonomically and functionally to the needs of patients who are fully conscious during the procedure. Despite its imposing size, the unit is thus intended to appear trustworthy and at the same time convey a highly professional impression.
«The design of the treatment unit inspires confidence in its technical precision. The carefully designed control module also deserves attention.»
Comment from the jury of Design Price Switzerland 2015
Our industrial design for the Magnetic Catheter Steering System including the HMI controller was nominated for the Design Preis Schweiz 2015 and presented internationally as part of a year-long traveling exhibition.
The cardiologist sits in the control room next to the operating room and guides a catheter through the patient's blood vessel using a joystick. All the way to the heart chambers, where the cardiac arrhythmia is specifically treated
The peripheral components, such as the surgical 3D joystick, which is a central interface between the surgeon and the treatment unit, were also developed in close cooperation with physicians.
