Industrial Design of a Pacifier for Medela designed by Fond Design

How to pacify parents

There are few products that pose as many sensual demands and technical and regulatory constraints as the design of a pacifier. For Medela, we designed this all-silicone pacifier that, for all its cuteness, also conveys a sense of medical expertise and Swiss excellence.

Babies can be picky when it comes to their pacifiers. The nipple shape and feel must be just right, or they'll spit it out. Also, it must be safe for the baby to use and appeal to the parents' tastes. Since it is mass-produced in Switzerland, it must comply with various manufacturing standards and regulations. We work with our engineering partner to fulfill all these requirements and create a top-quality product that aligns with Medela's brand values and stands out in the market.

What is the first step in designing a pacifier? You need to put one in your mouth and experience for yourself how it feels to be suckling again. After all, your main users - the babies - are not able to tell you what feels best.

Our design objective was to create an adorable pacifier made entirely of silicone. However, to align with the Medela brand, it also had to convey a sense of medical expertise and Swiss excellence.

Designing a pacifier is difficult because it has to satisfy two completely different user groups. Babies want a rewarding suckling experience, while parents desire a safe and attractive pacifier that reflects their parenting abilities. However, at the end of the day, parents want one thing from a pacifier: a little peace and quiet for themselves.

All surfaces facing the parents are highly polished, making the pacifier appear more hygienic and attractive with shiny highlights. However, rough surfaces feel more pleasant on the skin, and studies have shown that they provide babies with a more enjoyable sucking experience. Therefore, all surfaces in contact with the skin have a velvety touch.

Kindchenschema Concept for Medela by FOND Design

Kindchenschema refers to the physical features that are commonly associated with babies or infants, such as a round face, big eyes, chubby cheeks, and a small nose and mouth. These characteristics trigger an innate caregiving response in humans, which motivates us to protect and care for infants. The face of a panda bear also has these features. So we incorporated it into the product to make it adorable and appealing to parents.
